Panel Discussion on Using AI and its Impact on the Environment
The School of Environment & Sustainability collaborated with the student Cog Sci Club to host a panel on AI and environment.
Panelists included Professor of Cognitive Science Robin Zebrowski, Visiting Assistant Professor of Political Science Gregory Koutnik, and Associate Professor of Geology Jay Zambito.
Panel discussion included topics such as the large amount of energy that AI servers require and how that will impact global greenhouse gas emissions, natural resources like critical minerals and rare earth elements that AI computer infrastructure needs, and anticipated increase in electronic waste as technology rapidly changes.
The audience asked thoughtful questions that also steered the conversation toward the geopolitical implications of AI and how one might go about resisting the prevalence of AI in our everyday lives.
The event was well attended, with the audience composed of students, faculty, staff, and community members.
